Pet Allergy Consult Services at Carolina Value Pet Care
Everybody's aware of all the vaccines and preventive care, including heartworm, flea, and tick prevention. However, we also offer services if your dog or cat is acting itchier or scratching more, with some skin issues going on.
What is an allergy consultation for my dog or cat?
These consults will be with the veterinarian at Carolina Value Pet Care, and you'll get one-on-one time. It typically takes around 15 minutes, sometimes a little bit less, sometimes a little bit more, depending on what's going on with your pet. During that time, if your dog is having an ear infection, skin infections, maybe they're licking their paws or biting at their nails a lot, and it's driving you crazy, some hair loss associated with it, all these things are issues that we can help you get under control for your pet.
What kind of allergies could my pet have?
We are able to help many dogs and cats with allergies. Skin issues, seasonal allergies, food allergies and ear infections are problems that can be managed with the help of a dedicated veterinarian team. During our consults*, our vets will examine your pet's skin and ears and identify the origin of the problem. They will discuss that with each individual as well as have an understanding of the owners' expectations in the long run.
We have a few different methods to medicate and manage the diagnosed allergy and assist you to make the best choice for your dog or cat. We have an allergy questionnaire form we may ask you to fill out to get an idea of the baseline information. We then work towards a solution that works for you and your pet. Our vets provide you with educational materials to learn more about pet allergies so as a team, we can help your pet find relief from the itching, biting and pain.

How do you diagnose skin issues in dogs and cats?
During this time, I'll ask you a lot of questions to figure out what's brought you to the point that you wanted to come in to see us about the skin. Is it something that's been going on since your pup was a year old, or is it something that has been going on for the past 3 or 4 days and you want us to get it checked out? Through all that history process, hopefully, we can figure out exactly what it is that's most likely causing all of your problems. Then we'll come up with a treatment plan together.
What are the treatment options for my dog's or cat's skin issues?
Treatment options for skin and ear infections are varied. There are many topical therapies, such as shampoos, ointments, mousses, and sprays for the skin when they're infected and irritated. For ear infections, we have different solutions, including a one-time dose at the clinic or something to clean the ears and medicate at home, depending on the situation.
How do you treat my dog's or cats' allergies?
If there are issues with allergies, there's a lot we can do. There are oral medications that might block some of the signals in the body that tell your brain to feel really itchy. These medications can help. There are injections that address the same signals that tell you that you're itchy. These injections can actually bind to those signals so they never reach the brain to tell you that you're itchy. We have medications like that, or if antibiotics are necessary, we can provide them in shampoo form, as an injection, or as oral pills. There are numerous options available.
